Korea's In Gee Chun wins third Major title at KPMG Women's PGA Championship, Malaysia's Kelly Tan finishes T40
Korea's In Gee Chun claimed her third Major title in the KPMG Women's PGA Championship on Sunday, edging American Lexi Thompson and Australian Minjee Lee by one shot.
Chun carded 75 for the second day in a row at Congressional Country Club for a five-under-par 283 total. The 27-year-old had led by six shots at the halfway stage and by three heading tinto the last round, an advantage she lost in the first three holes.
Thompson surged ahead by two strokes at the turn, but struggled with her putting on the inward nine. A two-stroke swing at the par-three 16th when she bogeyed and In made birdie saw the duo tied at the top with two holes left.
The American then had a three-putt bogey on 17 to fall one back, and both players parred the final hole for In to finish one ahead. Lee meanwhile birdied the 18th to tie Thompson for runner-up honours on four-under-par.
"The first nine holes I had a lot of pressure, so to be honest, I couldn't enjoy playing golf," said In, who picked up a cheque for US$1.35 million from the US$9 million total purse.
"But I believed that if I stuck to my game plan then I had a chance on the back nine. So, I tried to hang in there. I'm so happy I made it. My body is still shaking though!"
The win ended a victory drought for In dating back to the LPGA KEB HaNa Bank Championship in October 2018. "I want to keep saying thanks to everyone who believed in me and never gave up on me," she said.
Malaysia's Kelly Tan settled for a joint 40th finish on five-over-par after a closing 77. This was the 28-year-old's 21st Major appearance, with her best performance coming in the 2020 edition of this event with a joint 13th finish at Aronimink Golf Club in Pennsylvania.
